♪ ♪ it's the breathtaking story of the weekend. the scenes from across the bay area and country of the stunning northern lights, now visible for some for a third night in a row. but if you're wanting to catch another glimpse, tonight's outlook may be dimming. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm dionne lim. we'll get to those chances in just a bit. but we begin tonight with the big first day of work for the new chief of oakland police, floyd mitchell takes over tomorrow after the former chief lauren armstrong,

was fired by mayor shengtao in february of last year, armstrong was accused of failing to properly handle some police misconduct within his ranks, but was since cleared of wrongdoing. so now, after more than a year of a void atop the department, abc seven news reporter suzanne phan takes a look at floyd mitchell's first order of business reducing crime in the town. >> i'm truly honored to be given this opportunity to serve as oakland's police chief. >> chief floyd mitchell takes the reins of oakland police department on monday. >> mayor shang tao appointed mitchell as police chief back in march. >> he's smart. he's a smart crime fighter who delivers results, and it is what i demand. >> mitchell served as police chief in lubbock, texas, and before that he was chief in temple, texas, and before that, a patrol officer in kansas city. he now takes on a department at a time when oakland finds itself with many concerns over public safety and especially many crimes are targeting our small

businesses. the oakland chinese chamber of commerce. what do you say about the new police chief and what he has in store for him? >> well, for our new police chief coming to our city, there will be many, many challenges. we are still under the federal monitor. so there are certain things that, you know, we can or cannot do. and one major issue is that, you know, no chase policy. >> chief mitchell says he will also sit down with the federal monitor to craft a strategy to get out from under federal oversight. >> i've been working with the police department for years. i've been through a lot of police chiefs. >> brenda grisham is with the violence prevention coalition. she says a lot has happened with oakland police in the year that it took to find a new police chief. >> during the time of the firing of chief armstrong and until now, it's just been a lot going on, and we're hoping that he comes in and focuses on the real issues. the things that need to be done in his interaction with the actual community, grisham

clothing shop in san francisco was broken into early this morning, and the store owners say the thieves got away with about $36,000 worth of merchandise. surveillance video from bacana in cow hollow shows two people seen breaking a window and entering the store at about 4 a.m, the owner tells us this was the first time the shop has been broken into. >> my question was why? why, why me and why the store? why a small business? i'm glad for my friends here. they are the ones that help me because i was crying here by myself. i didn't see no police. they show up here. they take a report. but i didn't see nobody help me emotionally. >> she worries she will be forced to leave san francisco if the issue happens again. also new at 11. the family of a bay area doctor who went on a medical mission to gaza are now relieved to be making contact tonight. we first told you about doctor haleh sheikholeslami, her departure to gaza last month. she is usually a family

physician at sutter health in san carlos, but she made the trip over to provide medical care to primarily children in the war torn region. however, since the border in the city of rafah between gaza and egypt is closed, humanitarian aid has not been allowed in or out of gaza. after days of no contact, we have now just learned the family got word about an hour ago, hearing that the doctor is safe. the family believes more u.s. doctors are also stuck with her group. their point of contact says the earliest the border will open is wednesday. now that comes as here at home, we saw protesters and counter protesters go face to face on the campus of stanford. today, we bring them home pro-israel group marched to white plaza to protest directly against the pro-palestinian encampment. one of those involved is a young israeli woman who was able to escape when hamas attacked a music festival in israel on october

7th. >> at october 7th, i survived with five friends of mine. we ran for 11 miles, along the old way when they were shooting at us. i came here because we have a peace rally. every college has an encampment. everyone has something to say. everyone has a lot of money going through this encampment. and israel stands for himself itself has nothing to do with it, and we are trying to bring justice into this place . >> pro-palestinian students came out and gave their own speeches throughout the afternoon, but both demonstrations remained peaceful. storm is offering up some pretty stunning nighttime images for a third night in a row that is, depending on where you live, the strongest such storm to hit earth in two decades will continue overnight. tonight but weather experts say the visibility won't be as strong, only dipping as low as lake tahoe. abc seven news reporter j.r stone is hearing from some

in the bay area who already got a good look. >> this image of the northern lights was taken along the side of a vineyard in yountville friday by margie verdin. >> i was just so jazzed. i was so amazed at how beautiful the showcase of colors were. >> margie couldn't see these images with her eyes. she put her iphone in night mode, hit the shutter and took the picture. then she saw this. >> it was just in my backyard. other people had to fly to ireland and norway or alaska. just to see those beautiful colors. and i saw it. >> and while many could only see the northern lights in their pictures, some like kitty nikolai, who were far from city lights and paradise, california, could see them starting around 1030. >> we could literally see it with the naked eye. the photos were just absolutely fantastic. so we got the we got the purples and the pinks and the greens. >> i thought i saw a pink hue in

the sky. and i you know how sometimes you question yourself and think it's because you want to see it? and i close my eyes and i open them again and i'm like, no, i see pink. >> we reached there at around 1:15 a.m, and at least for the first half an hour, we could very clearly see them with our eyes. >> stanford scholar sushant mahajan took these images from an area near the lick observatory in mount hamilton early saturday morning. >> we got a g5, which is why, like aurorae were visible in all 50 states, even hawaii. >> g5 was the highest level solar storm of the weekend. saturday night was a g3 and sunday night was a g3, possibly g4, depending on what expert you talked with. all of these images , though, were taken friday night and early saturday morning . >> you had to have it on night mode. and like my husband's got the, he's got the x, the iphone x, he doesn't have night mode, so he couldn't see it at all. visually or on his phone.

>> so in the newbies would come in and say, oh, i can't see anything. and, you know, somebody would always run over to them and help them with their phones. >> excitement, gratitude. i was awed because of being able to see it. >> jr stone, abc seven news a sight. >> all right, talking about the weather, bringing spencer in as we take a live look from our exploratorium camera tonight and spencer, we've got enough fog to keep some of us in the dark. we're also talking about our 24 hour accuweather forecast. give us the conditions. >> okay, dion. well, fog has been the big concern because obviously if the fog is dense and low, it will obscure our view. well, right now we've got some live pictures to show you. >> the fog is not so dense yet and not very widespread. here's a view from our exploratorium camera. we can see the sky here, and a little bit of light fog off in the distance, drifting over towards oakland. a similar view from emeryville. you can see lots of bright sky there, and from mount tam looking down onto the bay, you can see the absence of significant areas of

fog. however, the problem with viewing tonight, if you are in the central bay area is the reflection of city lights. urban lights off the moisture in the atmosphere that can obscure your view as significantly as as fog can. so for the next couple of hours, doesn't look like the fog is going to deepen or expand very much. but the best viewing areas here in the bay area will be away from city lights. the farther you get away from, say, a city like san francisco or oakland, the darker the skies, the better your view will be. that's the best guarantee i can give you of being able to see the northern lights tonight. the rest has to happen from the sun. and i'll have the accuweather seven day forecast coming up a little bit later. >> dion okay. makes a lot of sense spencer. thank you. okay well happening now canadians are facing dangerous wildfires and smoky conditions in multiple provinces. the wildfires are causing the sky to glow orange even in some areas. poor air quality and reduced visibility is expected to continue for the next two days. about 3200 residents were ordered to

to come. and our first topic. you're sure to hear much more about the big week ahead in the hush money criminal trial of former president donald trump. tomorrow, his fixer turned foe michael cohen is set to take the stand. and as abc news reporter alison cossack tells us, he's believed to be the prosecution's star witness against mr. trump. >> michael cohen is preparing to take the witness stand monday. he made the $130,000 payment to star stormy daniels immediately before the 2016 election, in order to buy her silence about an alleged affair, which trump has denied any wrongdoing. prosecutors accused trump of falsifying business records

linked to that payment, so the public wouldn't hear her claim, adding it was part of a scheme to deny voters information in which cohen was at the center of. during the trial, the jury heard a recording of cohen talking about how trump complained about paying. >> i can't even tell you how many times he said to me, you know, i hate the fact that we did it. and my comment to him was, but every person that you've spoken to told you it was the right move. >> on friday, cohen was rebuked by judge juan merchan for making public comments ahead of his testimony. the defense suggested he impose a limited gag order similar to the former president, but the judge stopped short of issuing an official mandate after court was dismissed. the presumptive 2024 republican nominee lashed out at the decision. >> there is no gag order to michael cohen. what the judge did was amazing. actually. it was amazing. everybody can say

whatever they want. they can say whatever they want. but i'm not allowed to say anything about anybody. >> the jury also heard unflattering things said about cohen during witness testimony. stormy daniels former lawyer keith davidson, called him a jerk and sort of a pants on fire kind of guy who no one wanted to talk to. former white house communications director hope hicks said cohen was trump's fixer only because he first broke things. alison kosik, abc news, new york. >> meantime, president biden will be back in washington tomorrow to deliver remarks for national asian american, native hawaiian and pacific islander heritage month. back on friday, he made a visit to the bay area for a couple of campaign fundraisers and was met by both pro-palestinian and israeli supporters outside each of those events. well, you may have seen this massive plume of smoke over the port of oakland today. it ignited at about 3:00 this afternoon. oakland firefighters tell us the fire burned through

a pile of lithium batteries. and that kind of fire can be tricky to extinguish. but the good news the fire was out and the smoke appeared to be clearing by around 4:00 today. firefighters are still investigating the exact cause. well, the internet is going wild for a smiling bear captured by a wildlife photographer near los angeles. >> find where i see animal tracks or animal activity happening. and a nice scene that i want to establish. and then i set the camera there and i need to leave it for several weeks, and then i come back and see what happened, and. >> all right, this. oh, it doesn't even look real. this special shot was taken a couple of weeks ago, but took time, as you heard, to discover the photographer actually picked that spot in the mountains overlooking pasadena and set up her camera a year ago. >> camera is a handheld dslr, like a canon camera that you would normally use, but it's hooked up to a motion sensor. so when the animal comes by, it senses motion just like your patio lights or your driveway

alarm and triggers the camera to go off? the right place at right time. her photos are for sale on cougar magic dot com, with some proceeds going toward animal conservation groups. wow. they don't even look real. >> amazing pictures. it's almost like the animals posed for them. look, it's smiling and just having a grand old time. just remind me not to go to that part of pasadena or get too close to a bear. but the pictures are truly amazing. they really are. our weather is actually pretty amazing too. you know, we we've been concerned about the fog. perhaps obscuring our view of the northern lights. the fog hasn't really amounted to much. so far, although there is the reflection of light off the moisture in the air, which of course is a problem. the darker the skies are, where you are, the better your chance of seeing the northern lights. high pressure the controlling factor in our weather right now giving us mainly sunny days and relatively clear conditions inland during the night time. right now the wind is relatively calm, but we do have an onshore flow and the fog, such as it is,

is beginning to push across the bay. it's just a few degrees cooler right now than at this time last night. so not a significant change. and here's a view from the exploratorium camera looking toward the bay bridge and off in the distance, we see some thin layers of fog down at the lower elevations, but not much to speak of at the moment. 51 degrees here in the city. oakland 53. mid to upper 50s in hayward, san jose, redwood city and 52 at half moon bay. another view from emeryville. seeing a little thin sliver of fog off in the distance there in oakland. but we've got lots of clear sky out there, 50 right now in santa rosa, petaluma 48, napa, 52 upper 50s at fairfield and livermore. concord 62 degrees. and let's check out our forecast headlines for tonight. during the overnight hours, the cooling fog will continue as push out over the bay. the week ahead will bring us mainly sunny days and of course, dry conditions. we see no rain in the seven days ahead and the temperature range in the week coming up will be generally mild to warm from the bay to our inland areas. so the forecast futurecast looks like

this. starting at midnight, the fog will begin advancing more vigorously across the bay between midnight and about 3 a.m. then after three, we'll see lots. well, you may not see it if you're not up, but lots of drizzle occurring offshore. we're not likely to get much of that moving over the land areas. so overnight lows generally in the low 50s, a little cooler at santa rosa where the low temperature will drop down to 47 degrees. also down at santa cruz, a low of 48 degrees. then tomorrow mainly sunny, except for some lingering low clouds near the coastline. highs will range from near 60 at the coast to upper 60s and low 70s around the bay shoreline. inland areas will warm to between 78 and about 83 degrees the farther inland, the better chance of experiencing some low 80s and here is the accuweather seven day forecast. notice the high temperature range won't show much fluctuation during the week until the very end of the week, so tomorrow through friday, look for highs inland around 84, 85, 86 degrees around the bay shoreline. mid 70s and 62 about

that many call home is increasingly frightening. >> rocha just returned from an expedition to australia and the great barrier reef, a habitat now caught in a global event called coral bleaching. >> coral bleaching happens when temperatures water temperatures go up and corals get very stressed and they expel the algae that lives within their tissues. >> the result is the bone colored bleaching that indicates the coral could soon die off if conditions don't change. this is now the fourth and possibly worst global bleaching on record, matched by historic ocean warming. and during the dive, rocha and his team made another unsettling discovery scientists hadn't expected. examining the coral at lower depths, where the water is typically cooler, they found the same warming trend and the same pattern of damage from rising water temperatures in the deeper reefs. >> it was supposed to be 76 to 78. it was 80 to 82, so it was causing the deep corals to bleach. so even though the deeper water was colder than the

shallow water, it was still warmer than normal. and causing the deeper corals to bleach. >> and the damage is widespread, said recently. the national oceanic and atmospheric administration estimated that more than half the world's coral reefs are now experiencing heat stress severe enough to cause bleaching, and those same rising ocean temperatures are affecting ecosystems well beyond the coral reefs, including the west coast of north america and our own bay area shoreline. teams from the academy have been documenting the loss of a predator known as the sunflower sea star that's unleashed an environmental chain reaction, damaging vital kelp forests that provide habitat to other native species. researcher rebecca johnson studies the fallout and believes it's a collective result of our changing climate the bleaching, the loss of the sunflower stars on our coast, the changes that we've seen here at this reef. >> i mean, these are all kind of like symptoms of global change. >> the academy already has two cutting edge programs geared to the future breeding the sea

stars in captivity to preserve their genetic diversity, while at the same time spawning coral that could someday be transplanted to help regenerate damaged reefs. >> you can kind of see that there's different types of corals. >> luis rocha believes coral reintroduction may ultimately be necessary to keep the reefs healthy, pointing out that ecosystems they provide are a lifeline to roughly a third of the ocean's creatures. >> so if the corals die, those species associated with them die. so it's not just the corals that are going to go. there's a lot of species that depend on coral. >> still, he's hopeful enough of the world's reefs will survive and flourish to form a kind of coral bridge to the future, giving researchers time to develop strategies to help the stressed reefs regenerate all. as the world works to combat the causes of climate change. >> while the percentage 54% worldwide is that amazing? >> but we've got some really smart and committed teams of researchers working on a way to mitigate the effects of a warming sea waters. >> and it looks like they're coming up with some answers that

may keep the ecosystems in balance, may not be too, too late. >> exactly. >> well, but it's a it's a mad rush, though. you know, we're racing against time and against the increasing warmth of the of the earth. >> yeah, but good to see that there are the researchers on top of it and really dedicating their time. >> they really are. yeah, that's for sure. let's take a look at what's happening with our weather. we've got, we're going to have an advance of the low clouds and fog across the bay during the overnight hours. by about 3 a.m. or so, we'll see showers and drizzle developing offshore. now a spot or two of a raindrop or 2nd may drizzle, drop may hit the ground areas, but we're basically talking about showers and drizzle out over the sea, overnight. low temperatures, mainly in the low 50s. highs tomorrow under increasingly sunny afternoon skies, about 60 at the coast. upper 60s, low 70s near the bay, low 80s inland. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we have a week of a steady pattern ahead. mainly sunny skies, afternoon highs, and a steady range. mid 80s inland, mid 70s around the bay. low 60s on the coast with minor cooling.

teammates that found themselves on tough times. >> i want to put on your espn analyst hat for a second. yeah, purdy entering his third year. he enters healthy. alex, how big is that to enter the year healthy. and what expectations do you have for him to make that jump into his junior season here in the nfl? >> i'm excited for him. he's the real deal. i you know, i had a lot of fun this last year on espn, battling all these naysayers and crazy talk surrounding him. i mean, this guy had one of the best seasons at quarterback, in the last 25 years, and it was all deserved. i mean, this guy does it all. i think he has so much courage in the pocket. this guy stands in there with the best of them under pressure. he's so accurate. and then i think he's kind of proven to everybody what he can do outside the pocket as well, really special. throwing the ball downfield and using his legs when he has to. i think he's, again, the real deal. i'm sure there will still be some haters out there this next season and can't wait for him to kind of continue to prove them all wrong. >> i wonder what the fans they they say they have an alex smith

memory. they come up to you as a 40 niner. what what game is that? what play is that? what moment is that for you? >> certainly one that jumps out for me is the new orleans game at candlestick. you know, and i think obviously a pretty special game to go back and forth like it did. and then the dramatic ending, obviously made it made it pretty memorable with the run more fun or the touchdown throw because they were both great. oh i mean, i mean, i think that's what made it so unique. i mean, what there were four touchdowns in the last four minutes. yeah, just such back and forth and, you know, i thought the run sealed it off, you know, and, and, you know, as i'm spazzing out in the end zone, had no idea there'd be two more touchdowns. and, you know, in the span of a couple of minutes. and, but to throw to throw the touchdown pass obviously to vernon to my memory of candlestick. and i mean it just going absolutely bananas. all the niner fans. and it's something that i'll never forget. and obviously you know a special place with so much history and really cool it is to have obviously a small piece of it. >> tickets still available. dwight clark award.com lpga tour. nelly korda going for her record six straight win. it did not work out for her. she
